AVR Projects intro projects more than flashing lights

I have recently aquired an ATAVRISP programmer and sampled a few atmega32s. I have also completed more than enough trivial PIC projects that I am ready to move on to bigger and better things (i hope). There is a port of GCC for the avr (aptly named avr-gcc) which i have found much earier to use than SDCC or any of the other free PIC C compilers. Not to knock them - SDCC is a great project. I just find that I have better support for AVR chips and a robust toolchain for linux.
